Cold Storage

Adrian has been with Norish all his working life, starting as a cleaner

I have been with Norish for 32 years and I became Site Manager in 2015. The Norish site here at Brierley Hill is mainly cold storage. We have 8,500 square feet of cold storage space and we can handle 1,000 palettes of chilled products. 80% of the food we handle is pork that is exported from our site to countries like China, South Korea and Japan. In fact, we send eight containers a day for export, five days a week.

Within this process, we do a lot of blast freezing. The pork comes in from various sources and we freeze it to -15 degrees. We also take in chilled beef from South Africa. We typically take in 10 loads a day. The palettes are then put into refrigerated containers for export. Covid disrupted the supply chain and the availability of containers, but things are getting better now.

Exciting times

We have 35 people at the site, working three shifts Monday to Friday and we plan to expand the site in terms of more palettes. Our new partnership with Thermotraffic and the involvement of Nichirei have brought new faces into the company so things are moving and it’s a good time to join Norish.

Ideally, we are looking for people with at least two years of forklift experience in a fast-moving environment. Of course, you should also be able to work in cold storage conditions. You will have opportunities to develop and, ultimately, it’s all about your attitude to work. I grew up locally and started as a cleaner at the site 32 years ago. I then worked my way up through roles such as forklift driver, Shift Leader, Supervisor and Operations Manager.

All these roles enabled me to develop in areas such as interpersonal skills. They also taught me a wide range of operational knowledge. Above all, I have seen and done everything involved with the site and my progress proves that anything is possible at Norish!
